Peconic House
About
Situated atop a bluff overlooking Hampton Bay, this vacation home for a multi-generational French family enjoys sweeping views across the water while remaining quietly anchored in its natural setting. The five-bedroom residence is set into a gentle slope, its low profile allowing the house to sit comfortably within the landscape and to reveal itself gradually from two approaches — on foot and from the bay.
The form of the house is shaped by climate and everyday comfort. A narrow plan allows summer breezes to move easily through the interior, while a green roof and partial submersion into the earth help moderate seasonal extremes, giving the home a sense of calm continuity throughout the year.
The clients envisioned a simple, unpretentious retreat. Refinement is achieved through consistent detailing and a restrained palette of cedar, white oak, weathering steel, and limestone. These materials are allowed to age naturally, bringing warmth and subtle variation over time. Soft, diffused lighting minimizes visual interruption and gently draws attention to the grain and texture of the cedar surfaces.
In the upper-level communal spaces, expansive Vitrocsa glazing opens the interior to the bay beyond, softening the boundary between inside and out. Terraces cascade gently with the landscape, providing opportunities for leisurely outdoor activities and supporting an unhurried rhythm of daily life shaped by light, weather, and view.
